1972 evinrude 85hp overheating

I've enjoyed learning from this forum immensely and am very appreciative of all the great info out there.

I do need some help and guidance of my own now and couldn't find anything specific to my engine.

After a great day of fishing about a month ago I was headed back to the dock at WOT when a loud buzzing about made me jump out of the boat completely! I immediately throttled down...shifted it into neutral (electronic shift) and shut it down. It was buzzing for maybe 15 seconds. I was a long way from the dock and after running on the trolling motor for about an hour I decided to fire it up again. It ran for maybe a minute then the buzzing came back.

I've never tore apart a boat engine before, and to be quite honest am not much of a mechanic in general. However, I do have the desire to learn and would appreciate any and all feed back.

Where should I start?

Possible the water pump impeller disintegrated. If you have no repair history on the engine-start with inspection and replacement of the water pump impeller in the lower unit. If you still get an overheat warning, disassemble of the thermostat housing-replace the vernatherm and check the nylon pressure relief valve. A factory service manual is a must if you plan to do the work yourself. Contact Ken Cook Co. in Milwaukee for an original.
