Disconnect the black/yellow wire from the pack and see if you have spark.

I disconnected the Black/Yellow wire from the power pack and still no spark. Do you think i might need a new power pack?
Thanks, Brian

Brian, the Black/Yellow wire simply bypasses the safety circuit. Its a good way to test to see if something including the safety switch is causing the issue.

The safety circuit will cause a no spark situation if faulty.

Have you checked the main fuse? IF blown, you will not have spark.

With all due respect to everybody. that is a 1971, not a 1972. boobie was correct in his advice to try it with the black/yellow wire disconnected. matt was partially correct, the black/yellow wire goes to the igniton switch, not the safety circuit. The ignition switch grounds it to stop the motor when turned off. Disconnecting it defeats the kill circuit as a test. There is no "safety circuit", and the fuse will NOT prevent spark. In fact, the starter won't even crank the motor is the fuse is blown. So, forget the fuse for now.

So, do you have a blown power pack?? Possibly. But not necessarily. You need a tester called a DVA meter to properly check the system out without spending $$ for parts that may or not be bad. Inventing your own funky tests can destroy otherwise good parts.

I must say this is a great forum. I got her running!! I metered everything out and found everything ok. I cleaned all connections with contact cleaner and some 220sp. Found a ****ty ground as well. She fired right up. Took for a test rip yesterday and runs great! I have truely learned a lot about this motor in the past week! I'm willing to help anyone else with electrical issues seeing I went thru the entire process! Thanks again....Brian

Brian, I may take you up on that offer pretty soon. I bought a 1972 (?) Evinrude 50hp model 50273-C today. Actually, it's a boat, trailer and the motor. They didn't have a key nor a battery so I'm buying it untested. They're the 2nd owners and in the over 6 years they've owned it, never tried to start the motor and never had the boat in the water. The husband has since passed away and the wife wants to simply sell it all. The price seemed too good to pass up even if the motor doesn't run. I have absolutely no idea about boat motors and very little about engines in general, but I figure there's only one way to find out. I know I'm going to have to do stuff I have no idea about, like rebuilding the carb, a new impeller, new fuel filter, new plugs and obviously...redoing the key (is that a locksmith thing or do I put in an entirely new part? Anyway, I'm excited to get the ball rolling and having at least one very ship-shape boat ready for the water in the coming spring/summer.
