I am having trouble with electric start (I assume) on my 100 hp Evinrude. I just got this motor, and the last two week-ends I had it on the water I had troubles getting it started. Some times it would start right up other times, I would have to remove the housing cover and put a jumper from the two hot leads to by-pass the electric start. I have lots of fire and fuel seems good, the starter won't even engage - hence why I can start it by jumping. At first I thought it wasn't shifting into neutral before shutting the motor down (this still may be the case) I have fiddled with the buttons when I am having this problem, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to fix this...it is starting (sorry about the punn) to make my wife nervous being out on the water.

Check and clean all your battery and starter connections. Lose the wing nuts and get a couple of good stainless nuts to use on the battery and wrench them down. Unless I misread your post it sounds like you are not getting juice to the starter.

There must be fire, and my only reason for saying this is once I jump the hot leads the starter engages and starts the motor. That makes me think it is something to do with the electric shift!!

neutral safety switch in the remote conrol box might be sticking. take a tester when it happens and have someone turn the key to the start position and put the tester on the two small terminals on the starter solenoid. You should read 12 volts. If not the safety switch or ignition switch is the problem. Neutral safety switch would be my first test if no voltage. moving the position of the control a few times might free it up.

Check your ignition and neutral safety switch.

thanks, I will throw my tester in the boat for the coming week-end. I have tried moving the switch several times when this problem occurs, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Is it possible if it is the neutral switch that is just bad contacts and I only need to clean it? thanks again for your help.
