As a newby, I removed the lower and replaced the water pump.

The shift lever has been changed and the lower unit spline has been turned by stupidity.

there are two plastic parts that slide onto the shift spline shaft in the lower unit and I dont have a clue as to the position needed to align with the female spline in the upper unit.

Help Help

The shift spline on the lower will rotate all the way around in one direction but be very difficult to turn all the way in the other. Rotate the shift spline and feel how it 'clicks' into place in two different posisitions. Those are Neutral and Reverse. Either will work to reinstall the lower as long as the shifter in placed into the same position.

Reverse is good as you can turn the prop to rotate the vertical shaft to align the splines with the motor.

Also, if you motor is old enough the reverse tilt lock cam is a plastic ramped piece that fits down over the shift spline that pushes up the reverse tilt lock lever when the motor is shifted out of Forward. Install this piece such that the upper part of the cam is forward when the spline is shifted into Reverse.

If the second plastic part is a tube, that that fits into the output of the water pump to assist you in guiding the water transfer tube into the pump as you lift the lower unit into position.

Wow, thanks--have spent nearly two days trying to figure it out. I will get on it tomorrow and plead help again if I get lost. Mine has the ramp and cam. So will mess with it until I see it raise for reverse.

Really appreciate it

Captain--
Put her back together--seems to go ok until the last 1/8 inch, but pulled up with the bolts. Put it together in reverse and think the lower unit shaft was ok. Cannot get it out of reverse (engine not on) Moved the prop, thought that might help but no. Before the water pump replace, it was hard to change gears, thought it was control or cables. With the lower unit off, the control shifted gears easily. Now not at all. Any suggestions?

Thank you

It still isn't lined up, pull the lower and try again, they are not fun, spent 2 hours one day on a 65hp cursing it until it finally "meshed". Test shift it before you tighten everything back up, that's how I knew it was still off. You'll know when you get it, everything slides back together the way it should, it's hard to explain, it's a feel thing.

well cant get her back in--5 times --gotta rest. Seems that the larger nut and stud on the pump housing is hitting a piece of the casting close to the shaft hole.
so new prob. seems that the shift shaft is not meshing with the female spline also- start again tomorrow- tired
