I can not get any spark. The coil is not getting power. I have 12 v to the white and red , and over 10v to the brown for the trigger, while cranking. I get 71 ohms between the white connector on starboard side and the brown connector on the port side. The thing is, saturday, it started. I let it run a few min in a large barrel of water, then shut it down. Now it will not spark at all. I did the trouble shooting from CDI page, whats next?

The power to the coil is pulsed, so you will not see a steady reading. What did the CDI Electronics trouble shooting procedure indicate? Bad trigger? Bad Switchbox?

Since it is intermittent, I would suspect your wiring. Check for missing insulation and broken wires.

According to the CDI trouble shooting, the box is good. The wires to the trigger have been cut and butt connected, very close to the housing. I fear this may be the cause.

Flux andSolder those butt connectors. You must have a good connection.

Re: 1972 800 thunderbolt ignition problems

So, I used non insulated butt connectors, solder and shrink tube to redo the connections to the distributor. I charged the battery over night, and it fired up and ran, I shut it down, and restarted a few times. Then I bought a new battery, put more gas/oil in, and It once again will not start. No spark. If I jump the brown and white connectors on the box, and tap the black to ground, it sparks all day long. What now? is the CDI replacement housing my only option? can the current Dizzy be opened and rebuilt?

No rebuild of the trigger is possible. If it really is a bad trigger, you can get a rebuilt, new or used dist housing.

Any recommendations on where to get a new or rebuilt one? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like the trigger circuit in the distributor is faulty or the wiring to it. Have not heard of them being repairable.

Should i have continuity between the black and white terminal on the trigger side of the box with it unhooked?

Don't know the answer to your question, but from your description earlier, it sounds as though the switchbox is working properly.

Re: 1972 800 thunderbolt ignition problems

I bought a 1974 merc 850 on craigslist for $350, the only thing I tested was compression, and it was 120 on all four cylinders. When I got it home I went through the same thing as you where all the tests were good but motor wouldn't run. I finally caved in and took it to a "pro." I told him what I paid, and that I would not spend a bunch to fix it but I would happily spend 100 dollars to know the problem. He said, Ill tell you the problem for free and fix it for $150. The problem, WIRING, WIRING, WIRING. He said I bet you all your electronics are great and you prolly just need new wiring. Then he said something like those MERC guys in the 1970s had rocket scientists building their blocks and drunken blind monkeys doing the wiring, after they went and found the ****tiest insulated wire on planet earth. The insulation cracks and creates shorts that arc sometimes, and sometimes not. He said it is impossible to trace the single short because there are prolly 20 of them, but in his 300 years of experience he has re-wired 4-5 million 1970s mercs and can do it in a couple of hours now he has done so many. He was exaggerating about the experience thing Im sure, but when he said "when I am done, Ill never see you again," he was being serious. That was several years ago and he was right. Take the time and REWIRE EVERYTHING. Ended up costing me $225 for the pro to do it, but it was worth it.

Hey there, I had just bought a 1971 merc 650 and i had the same problem it sounds like, i figured out it was the wiring in the key switch were all corroded and falling apart. I replaced wiring and it works great now sparks everytime. Open it up and take a look.
