1972 650 Merc won't start

I have a 1972 merc 650 engine that won't start. When I try to start it the flywheel turn over fine but it will not start for me. My negative battery cable is also getting very hot during this. I have plenty of gas,and the spark plugs are about 6 months old. Does anybody have any ideas on this?

td, i burnt the negative connector off my battery from a dirty connection. also check your cables very well.. a small nick will allow moisture in side and you may only have several strands make the connection.
