Need some help here...

I have a 1972 65 hp evinrude outboard engine that will turn over and over and over (no spark) and will not start.

I have figured out if I take of the wire terminal cover and touch the #11 Black/White screw terminal (with somthing metal) it instantly fires off and runs fine. The screw and wire lead are clean and tight. It only takes just making the lightest contact with this screw to make it go. If I shut it off again it normally starts again. If I unplug the battery and try to restart it sometimes does not. I then touch this with a metal object and it will start again. WHY IS IT DOING THIS????? and what does this scew/wire lead to. It looks like the wire goes up underneath the flywheel. I've looked at the the manuals on this site and it dosent tell me...

please help!!!!!!! Thanks, Nick

Here is a upload video, please let me know if you can tell what is wrong... Note the first time I touched the screw it was with plastic and nothing happened. The second was with insulated plies,, i was carfull not to touch any other metal at the same time.

Not going to be much help on the start-nonstart except to say make sure the contact undeer that screw is very clean and shiny bright and then tightens down snugly. Also inspect that sire for any type of break under the insulation. Lastly, I didn't see you having the motor in a tub of water or on a hose connection; this is very bad for that rubber water pump impeller when the motor starts and runs even for the few seconds. Others will chime in that can better help you. Good luck.

Thanks, for the advise,,, I have taken out the screw and its very clen and shiney, I sanded it down. I can actually tap on it with a rubber mallet and it wont do anything. I took a small screw driver and just brushed against it and it started. Once i do this it will restart for quite a while. Ususally if I unhook the battery and hook it back up, I will have to repeat whats in the video to make it start again...

I think this is connected to the timer base.... what does that do and why does metal to metal contact (not grounding) make it work????

nmccumber, I am curious if you found what the problem is. I have a 72 65 hp Evinrude doing the same exact thing. It seems if the battery has been down or disconnected it will not start ( no fire to all 3 cylinders ). I can go out and try it the next day and it starts right up. Unfortunately, it did it last Sunday morning on the lake and I trolled back about 3 miles to the ramp. Thank goodness for strong batteries and a good trolling motor. I haven't tried your screw driver trick but I will next time.
