1972 60 hp johnson

i just bought this boat and finally got it fire up in the yard this my first boat so i have little knowledge my problem is when i got it on the water it reves up in neutral but when i put in gear has no power it moves about 10 mph it has good compression and hot spark just took apart the carbs and cleaned them well new plugs and wires ive ask friends and they say timing is off but i dont know how to check that

when you cleaned the carbs did you just spray in it or did you take thr jets out and needle and seat and make sure there is no trash in them?

When you say, "Good compression and hot spark" what's that mean? Outboards act differently when there's back pressure on them, so it's best to start at the top. Also, as juanjuice pointed out, did you take the carbs apart? An outboard motor only needs 3 things to run; Compression/Spark/Fuel. Not much outside of that.

it runs i just cant get it to go any faster than an idle speed when i put it in gear. in neutral it goes in to high rpms sounds like it should go 50 mph not 10
