1972 25hp evinrude problems

Ok,I need help.My 25 still runs like a 4hp.Changed the fuel pump because it was not holding pressure.Also changed the impeller.Idles great and revs up in nuetral.When I put it in forward,it slows down.Took the carb apart and cleaned the already spotless carb.When its running and pull either S/P wire off and it stops.Cannot afford a book at the moment and called many libraries with no help.What else can I check with a very tight budget at this moment?

Will it iddle under load, in exa. when boat is moving forward in gear ?<br /><br />If it does, first check if stator plate under flywheel moves freely. Look at the stator plate cam, in front in top of carb. There is a little greasy white roller that applies throttle as stator plate moves. It is important that throttle butterfly does not start to move before roller is between the two marks on cam. Also check if one of the linckages has fallen apart, so the movement doesnt open throttle butterfly on carb. they tend to get worn, and I´ve seen that. Post back.<br /><br />What happens when you throttle up under load ? will it miss, spit and sputter ?
