1972 18HP Evinrude Tune UP Help

Son picked up tune up kit: points and condenser plugs. I went to put the points in and realized I don't know the point gap. I also don't see a lobe on the crankshaft? So any help appreciated.

.020 is the gap, it's not much of a lobe.

Is there a trick to knowing where the points should open at?

If you set the gap at .020" on the peak of the cam (maximum opening) the points will break at the correct dwell angle, Bill.

Set the timing according to the Service Manual that you really need if you don't have it yet.

I have a service manual coming, won't be here till the middle of next week. Didn't know I had to set the timing. Is thgis hard to do and do I need any special tools?

If you set the points at .020 at the peak of the crankshaft cam lobe, your iginition timing will be properly set.

Put new points in today. Running smother. I still think the low idle speed adjustment needs tweaked. Hoping for some lake time tomorrow just to check it out. Fishing will be a bounus.
