I have just put a new engine on my boat (1971 mercury 650 w/ thunderbolt ignition) I rebuilt the carbs on this engine before installing.... my question is about the 2 main cables that connect the throttle and gas lever from the ignition. I was able to adjust the main throttle so that the gears matchup (forward, nuetral, and reverse) I am not sure where the starting position on the gas lever should be... there is somewhat of a locking position in accordance with the linkage off the distributor bascially right in the middle and I was guessing this would be where you might adjust it to.. but I wanted to make sure this position is correct before I move on to adjusting the idle speed on the carbs... the engine runs fine but hesitates a little before accelerating from neutral...any tips on this would be a great help...

thanks again guys,
boaty boat

The throttle stop screw is also used to adjust the idle speed. The fast idle lever on the throttle should be in the down position when making the above adjustment.

If you had 4 Carbs you would need 2 pumps. It will run fine like it is.

The stumble from idle will probably be a lean idle mixture. If you havent got one get a manual cos with an old engine youll need one if only for reference.Jericho the tach wires are connected to the cotrol box there should be a plug under the choke button..Hope this helps

Re: 1971 mercury 650

On my '71 Merc 650 the tach connects to a socket at the front of the control box. I mistook the cover for a dead idle control knob at first. This is a 3 pin connector based on an old connection type called a "jones" plug. I would like to know where I can get a tach for this.
