My father and I recently purchased a 1971 Mercury 500 to replace our 1963 Merc 400 long shaft.

At any rate, with electric start, electric choke, and tach output, we now have to add to the complexity of our dash. There is not much room behind the dash (not nearly enough to cut a 3" hole - like most tachs require). We currently have a vintage Aqua Meter speedometer (surface mount), and we would like to match it with an Aqua Meter tach.

Is 'surface mount' tach the correct terminology to use to find a tach that does not require drilling a large whole in the dash? We are having horribly luck trying to find ANY of these types of tachs. Also, are there any tachs currently made that are 'surface mount'?

Does anyone know a good resource for Aqua Meter gauges or Air Guide gauges?

classic boats.com has a nice picture of an Air Guide tach in the 'surface mount' style we are looking for:

Anything would be helpful.

Thanks

David
