Taper on crank and flywheel are "self locking tapers" otherwise wouldnt need puller , but to hold have to be precise . Just my 2 cents .
Follow up: I did exactly that, and left the shear key off completely. Made some marks on the top of the crankshaft and the flywheel to use for aligning to the keyed slot. I torqued down to 105, and all seem well, started right up. Thanks for talking me down off the ledge. I still plan on having it machined at the end of the summer but all looks well right now.
