Hi,

I just bought a 1971 gypsy 14 with a 50hp, and i would like to tow it with my 2002 ford escape 2.0L. The tow capacity on the truck is only 1000lb because it is a 4 cylinder. Do you think this boat is over 1000lb's?

Thanks

the boat =850 lbs.
motror = 100 lbs.?
gas tank (1-6 gals)=50 lbs
anchor =15 lbs.
battery (1)=40 -50 lbs
trailer = 4 or 5 hundred lbs.
ice cooler and other misc gear 100 -150 lbs.

Re: 1971 Gypsy 14 weight

I just found an original brochure for a 1973 gypsy 14' and this says the boat is 500lb. is this right?

The boat is 500lbs, the motor is about 200lbs, the trailer is about 200lbs. Put anything in the boat like gas, anchor, etc and you will be over the limit.

And you won't be able to carry any cargo or passengers in the Escape either, because cargo generally is subtracted from the tow capacity.

But if you really want to tow the boat with the Escape, you should add a large transmission oil cooler (if its an automatic) and engine oil cooler with remote dual oil filters. That will give you good cooling, and extra oil capcity. Keep it out of overdrive so the 4 cylinder has the rpm's up and your speed down around 50-55 mph and you will probably be fine. But don't say I told you to do it....

It is a 5 speed.

Thanks, I might use my truck for the short trips (under 20 minutes) and use a larger truck for anything longer.

Thanks again

honestly you will be fine. Iv seen pasenger cars towing biger boats (stupid and looks funny). Sad my atv has a 1200lb towing compacity and i lawnch my jetskis and 14ft fiberglass. 20min drive will be no problem just dont hold it to the floor and slow down ahead of time.

Welcome Aboard too !
I'd take it to a public scale to check it's weight - better see if it's holding water in the foam / and be sure of your actual weight . It's nice to see another MFG surviveing .
