1971 Evinrude 9.5 prop doesn't turn

I just bought a used 71' sportwin 9.5. It starts up great, revs well, but until I put it on the water, I didn't see that when I shifted it into gear, nothing happens . It doesn't seem to sound/rev any different, and the prop does not move. When the motor if off, and in gear, I cannot turn the prop.
I do not know much about these things, but would like to hear from someone what they think might be the problem. I want some info before I bring it into the shop, or try to repair myself.

Wow, that is a peculiar problem. You have about the same lower unit as I do. I have 25hp. Look on crowleymarine.com look at catalog and pick your engine you will see a diagram.
I say peculiar because your motor runs good. ie shaft is turning....which is connected to pinion geear which connects to forward and reverse gears always spinning when motor is running. You said you are trying to turn prop when it is in gear. This is a little tuff when going in the right direction. try that again

I just took my lower unit off the other day. if you want my advice, I would drain lower unit and open it up... its very easy. you drop lower unit and turn upside down... take 6 screws off and the pivot screw and pull off the bottom so that you can see what's inside. if you like what you see close it up.

No need to get invasive here. How much torque did you put on the prop when you tried to turn it by hand. I could be you just have a spun hub.

Your right, commander, I try to turn the shaft in gear again. I would also pull try to pull the prop off to check to see if anything is seized or broke inside.

I could be you just have a spun hub

it's driven by a shear pin isnn't it? If that had gone the prop would spin freely in gear.

If the two halves of the shift rod had come apart the prop would still spin.

I reckon its going to need a look inside the gearcase to figure this one out. there must be more than one thing wrong I think.

I wonder does it pump water when running.

the prop would move some with a spun prop. either the shift linkage is disconnected, or a possible broken drive shaft. i think either way drop the lower unit, you need an impeller any way.
