Hey all I have picked up two Ted Williams a 1974 4.5hp and the one in question 1971 7hp (217.59440) I brought it home Pulled on it 35 times trying to start it changed the spark plug and put new gas in it finally after 20 more pulls got it to start and it ran great I found out the previous owner disconnected the fitting for a remote fuel tank and did it all janky so it wasn’t getting fuel and had a leak so sorta getto set that straight for now (I’ll fix it soon) and it ran but no water shooting out the two little holes on the lower unit so I didn’t let it run each try just few seconds in a bin of water so I took it apart and noticed there was no oil in the lower unit and there was a screw missing in the skag so I took that apart it was nice and shiny metal it was also all milk shake creamy in it so I cleaned it sealed it back up put oil back in it and checked the impeller it looked almost brand new so I put the lower unit back together and aligned the water tube and boom fired it up and water was shooting out but it was also coming from a hole right under the power head ? Never seen that before so is that normal with this engine? or is there a bolt missing ? And can I run it like that? I’ll attach some pics thanks :):)E1182FA3-BD28-4812-9096-5FBEF5FA84AA.jpeg

Whats supposed to be in that hole? Never seen anything like that. Should just spray out exhaust ports. Is the water tube installed properly?

The Johnson runs but the lower unit slips out of gear and stopped pumping water so I tore it apart and changed the gears out from another 40hp donor Johnson and put a better used impeller and now the flipping thing isn’t slipping but is leaking gear oil out of at least two places and still no water pumping out i lined up the water tubes and everything so when I can afford it I’m going to get a seal kit and a new impeller and try that but I keep some sort of gas powered backup I don’t like paddling back to shore 4 miles plus.

it reams like no one here in Maine knows how to take care of an outboard every one I have bought from a garage sale or traded for on Facebook has some major problems with the lower unit

Those lower units are easy.----I was repairing them at 18 years old as mechanic at a Johnson dealer !-----Is water 6 or 7" above the impeller in your test bucket ?----Thermostat in place ?

I’m new to working on outboards to be honest and that’s awesome I bet you learned a lot doing that . I didn’t know it had to be that much above the impeller I was told at a local boat shop that it had to be above the intake at the bottom of the lower unit above the impeller. dam Im going to be so pissed off at myself if the water not pumping is my own ignorance I’ll attach a photo of the bin/garbage can it’s in I think your right I normally run the muffs but someone said I should try the bin I’m going to order the seals is there a sealant I can use on the skag? And lastly the thermostat I haven’t messed with it I’ll find it and check it im sure there’s a test in the book for it . on my boat there is a hot light on the dash but I figured the system didn’t work anymore because it was so old I’ll look into that (I’ve been thinking of attaching an after market automotive temp gauge but just didn’t know where to put it on the outboard I use a Autometer gauge and sensor on my 1976 Dodge Powerwagon and it works great)

Thanks for the great advice racerone: :):):):)

Yeah that’s what I’m asking ? I’m not sure and yea I took the lower unit off and double checked and the water tube is installed right and the impeller looks good I thought about plugging it and seeing if more water comes out the exhaust ports or not :)
