hi all i have just bought a second hand boat with a evinrude 50 hp selectric. have been doing a bit of research regarding the shifting as mine will not select gears. thought i would start at the control box first, there is a grey, brown and purple wires not conected. a wireing diagram would be great as i would like to rewire the lot. any help would be much apriceated. thanks

Is the overheat horn connected? Tan (not brown) goes to the horn. So soes one of the several purple wires.

Grey is the tachometer signal wire.

Do you have the motor running? It won't shift if not running.

HYDRO-ELECTRIC SHIFT

________________________________________
(Hydro Electric Shift) (J. Reeves) The shifting setup of the lower unit is what's called a "Hydro Electric Shift", which is quite complex consisting of voltage being applied to solenoids in the lower unit which in turn change oil passages via a oil pump that supplies various pressure on a spring loaded shifter dog. The wires leading to the lower unit (at the powerhead) are "Green" and "Blue". The engine must be running or cranking over in order to shift out of forward gear. You CAN NOT use HI VIS lube in that lower unit. You MUST USE what OMC calls "Preminum Blend" lube, commonly called "Type C". (A thinner lube) In neutral, you need 12v to the "Green" wire. In reverse, you need 12v to both wires, the "Green" one and the "Blue" one. In forward, there should be no voltage to either wire. (The spring loaded shifter dog forces the unit into forward gear) To check the lower unit for proper shifting to make sure you have no trouble there, remove the spark plugs to avoid problems and to allow a higher cranking speed. This next step eliminates the actual shift switch in case problems may exist there.... Disconnect the blue & green wires at the knife connectors (the rubber insulated boots) leading to the lower unit at the powerhead, then using jumpers, take voltage direct from the starter solenoid to apply voltage to the "Green" wire for neutral, then both wires 'Green" & "Blue" for reverse (Remember the engine must be cranking over in order to shift). With no voltage applied, the unit should be in forward. No need for a ground jumper... the lower unit's already grounded. You may crank the engine with the key switch or by energizing the starter solenoid with a jumper wire.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

thanks for the reply's. my 50hp starts great but is not in foward gear as the prop dose not spin so looks to me that its in nuetral gear. i really need a wireing diagram for the control box as i think the person before me may have the wireing wrong i have a work shop manual witch tells me how to test it. but the first step is to hook up a ampere gauge to the green and brown(or red) from the back of the key switch. but there is no green at the key switch. would really like to no i got the control box right to start with.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

Just whoa up there a minute. Is it in neutral when it is not running? If it is,, the piston is stuck in the oil pump in the lower unit. Caused by neglect---you gotta change the oil regularly. If you wait till it is stuck in neutral or reverse, it is too late.

Disconnect the blue and green wires at the motor. That should put it in forward, running or not running. If it is in neutral, read what I just said.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

all good motor is in foward when off and gos into nuetral when running. this is correct? after examining the contral box closer i found that the black wire has over heated badlly and melted the insulation this could have been shorting on something so in the prosses of rewiring. dose any one know how the black wire overheated so much. cut 30cm of the contral wires and black is fine?

it is 40 year old wiring, insulation cracks.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

im still finding this hard to get my head around i really appreciate the help. here's where im at, i disconnected the blue and green wires from the lower unit, and the motor is still in neutral. I tested the green and blue wires, as described in the service manual, and got 6.1 ohms on the green wire and 5.9 ohms on the blue wire. Can anyone help?? I thought this would make the motor go into forward, if no voltage was on either wire.

The lower unit should defalt to forward when not running. Reread post #5.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

With no power, the unit should default to forward gear, as previous posters have said. If its still in neutral, then something is wrong, and probably not with the solenoids (see F_R s post). Have you drained the LU oil to verify that you have oil and not some odd sludge that may be gumming up the works? Just a suggestion.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

Thanks again I will change the oil again any handy hints I should know and about how much oil should I get? If the old oil (if there is any) is really bad is there a way of flushing it out to clean it internally? Or should the new oil be sufficent. Oh and what is the oil called again cheers for the reply really helps

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

In the past I have used automatic trans fluid or mineral spirits to flush the lower unit. Drain it and refill it with one of the above and start the engine on muffs and let it run all the while shifting through the gears several times. When it starts shifting properly, drain and refill with peoper oil. Has worked for me.

Re: 1971 50 hp selectric shift

I believe the gearcase capacity on that motor is 28 oz.

I have also previously used mineral spirits or Kerosene to flush the LU, but never on the hydro-electric shift motor. since either Mineral Spirits or kerosene is less viscous than the type-c oil you are supposed to normally use, I wouldn't think it would harm anything if you are just using it as a flush.

alright guys i am still having problems hear it is i disconected the green and blue at the knife connectors leading down to the lower unit this wires passed the ohms test. i put the muffs on and start the engine. with the motor running and no voltage to ether wire the prop dose not spin in forward like it should any ideas??? im itching to get out on the water help me please.
