1971 4HP Evinrude recoil question

When I pull on the recoil rope the gear that is supposed to go up and engage the flywheel doesn't raise up it just spins without lifting although about every tenth pull it works the way it supposed to. I've ordered a manual but thought someone might direct me on how to fix this problem. Thanks, Rick.

Wait till you get the manual. You are going to have to take the recoil apart and clean it up.

You might get lucky..... spray it thoroughly with WD-40.

HERE IS a diagram of the starter.

If you can avoid it dont let the spring escape.

If your efforts fail then you will have to read the manual.
