Primary pickup should be 4-6* BTDC, I would think. Max advance s/b 21* BTDC

According to the manual's engine specification I have it says that primary pickup for a 1971 1150 should be 2*. I notice the later years are all in the 4-6* BTDC range.

Is it wrong?

I am not sure, I had thought they were all the same, with the distributor igns. My OEM Service manual was taken by Hurricane Sandy, so I have no way to look it up.

Fazt or someone will be along to help.....

Just a quick update. I am trying to figure out my tach setup so I had to start the engine.. started up within 15 seconds. :)

I'm now figuring out a way to get a tach for this boat so I can make accurate adjustments.

A standard after market tach will work on that motor, but you may need to move the brown (non-distributor) wire on the switchbox, to one of the rectifier AC poles. Those old Mercs had the brownwire on the switchbox. Later models moved it to the rectifier.
