Its been a long time since i have been on here. i have been in and OUT of boats for some time. well today my neighbor offered me his 1970s Mako 17 with an Evinrude 130. the boat has been setting for a year, he tried to replace the water pump and could not get the lower unit back in so the boat has been setting ever since. looking it over i see one spot in the floor on the left side where it is soft to the left of the center console and a crack that seems cosmetic maybe where the top and bottom half of the boat was bonded together. the transom seems and sounded solid. i think that the boat finish is original. for the age it looks like a nice boat with a few troubled area nothing that would keep the boat from being sea worthy. he is asking 800 for the whole thing ( boat motor trailer and some goodies like depth finder so on and so forth) . he told me i can take it and look it over but i figure for that price why play games. am i making a mistake? i told him i will think it over and let him know tomorrow. he is a very nice guy especially telling me to take the boat and look it over but like i said i really dont work that way either i am gonna buy it or not. i am looking for something to just bang around with, nothing crazy. i can do all mechanical work myself. seems like a deal to me, but you know how that goes. the motor is very clean and i have heard it run ( a year ago ) any input? thanks and it feels good that i MIGHT be back on the water next season if i buy it.

99% of the time everything below the soft spot is also rotten/soft so be prepaired to strip and scrap or rehab

The crack is a lot more than cosmetic. The soft floor in a boat of that construction is a huge deal. It's not an $800 boat, its an $8,000 boat if you want it safe and seaworthy.

The T Top and trailer are worth 2-3 grand all day long.. Throw some Marine Tex into the crack by the rub rail , don't worry about the soft spot . Use it for a year and decide if you want to fix the soft spot and keep the boat. Worst comes to worst you can sell it down the line for 2 grand . Mako's are decent boats.

i get what your saying but the " soft spot " is not soft at all its raised up and doesn't move. there is an access plate there because its on the side where the fuel lines run. i see no bad stringers, actually i dont see stringers in that area at all because of the fuel lines and foam. for what i paid i feel i can enjoy it for a few seasons in Florida and still get my money back out of it. but then again maybe my thinking is all wrong LOL. i mean this is a 40+ year old boat so i am sure its in need of some kind of stringer repair at this point in its life. the transom is solid and 2 of my friends feel as if it might have been repaired or replaced some time ago.

little update. i took the boat over to my place and checked it out better. had a few of my boat friends check it out on different days to see what they said. both said " if you dont buy it i will " the engine and trailer are a 1999, the boat is a 1977. i did a compression test on the engine and all cylinders are sitting at 145. i even checked it against another compression gauge to be sure. got the lower unit on and charged the batteries. after a few cranks it fired right off and ran great. i am gonna pay him for it and try to enjoy it for a few season with the family, in this time of covid there is really little to do and enjoy. i dont have a lot of money, i have been in and out of it for most of my life but only owned small aluminum boats. i am a mechanic by trade so i can fix just about anything mechanical. its the hull work that would scare me. thanks for chiming in guys i always liked this board and the honesty people bring to the table.

Almost surely has water in the hull. Will need to remedy that.

i opened up every access hole, poked and banged around on every stringer i could see, i didn't find anything suspect. this boat has LOTS of foam in it, and lots of areas i can not get to. as i said its a 1977 so i am sure there is rot somewhere but at this point in time i am going to make it mechanically sound and enjoy it.

I have same boat 1984 and have had it for 20 years. The boat is a beast!! I have had it out safely in weather that my fellow boaters with 25 ft boats wouldnt leave the dock in.There were a few cracks n the fiberglass in the stern and friends told me not to buy it....That was 20 years ago and the boat is still a beast with no signs of slowing down. You will owe your neighbor a few lawn mowings after you pass him.Best of luck!!! and post back!! btw look inside your console for your gas tank. You should be able to get to the top of it.If it is metal then it is original and probably going to need to be replaced sooner or later if not already.Charlie
