Hello all.....

I just brought a 1970 22ft. Islander home today. i have been looking for one for over a year now and happened to find this one in California. It has been sitting for seven years and the interior is shot. There is a newly rebuilt 140hp Mercruiser and what looks like a good outdrive.

This is my second Starcraft wthe first being a 18' 1968 Chieftan. The Chieftan has a very tired 120 hp Mercruiser in it but it still heads for the lake at least once a week. Living in Phoenix, people can use the lakes all year around.

Anyway, my concern is that there is damage to the left rear of the boat. It was run into while in traffic. It is not hurt enough that I could not use the boat but I want it to be right. Having been a body man for several years I an thinking that I might find a replacement part and weld it in (TIG) like I would on quarter pannels on cars. I know that I am looking at a task but I am open to suggestions. I hate to use bondo.

Anyone out there have hull parts??

Hey Rod, I emailed you this morning and I see that you already found the place! Awesome!

For Starcraft specific stuff you'll want to swing over here, those guys are great...

Though, I need to warn you, they will be very jealous that you already have two, especially being on the west coast!

For rebuild/resto stuff here is the place to hang...

For your motor stuff, these guys know their game...

Glad you made it man! Click on the link in my signature and you'll see pretty much your same rig there, except, yours is way closer to running condition than mine:D

Cheers!

Re: 1970 Starcraft Islander

Hello all....

Today is the third day that I have owned my Islander. Todat I was able to totally strip the interior of the boat. The plywood at the rear of the boat was soft so I pulled it all. I was suprisede to find foam. My Chieftan did not have any at all. I have some aluminium work to do on the left corner but it is not as bad as I suspected. The transum is solid as a rock so tomorrow I will reinstall the foam and start fitting the floor.

I put the engine on the stand today. It was rebuilt last year before the owner gave up on the boat. That is a shame because it is an easy fix, just long hours.

The boat is huge compared to my Chieftan. I can hardly get in the thing, and getting out is equally as hard. How well will the 140 HP Mercruiser push it?? The Chieftan has a very tired 120HP and it will go 31 MPH. It has a 15P prop. I see all the props that came with the Islander are 23P. Ant thoughts about that?

Here are some photos.

Welcome to the fanatical Starcraft armada RD, nice Islander:)

You are in the right place, if you have I/O questions folks can help out. I've always loved Islanders and that is an oldie and a goodie. That steering wheel is priceless;)

Welcome to the club R.D, sweet project, be sure to look at Jas' thread, he re-worked those sides/gunwale tops, to make access in & out a tad easier.
