It should work just fine. Just run a ground strap from the ground post on the coil. The motor doesn't care how it gets grounded, as long as it gets there...

Do you have spark in the other coil? If so, swap the primary lead (+) from one to the other to see if the spark follows the wire.

You have to get the coils for that especially since you have the phasemaker ignition system. Sierra does not list a coil for that motor, mercury i believe still makes them. You need to get a manual because that ignition is tricky it has points but the condensors are built into the stator. I just went through all this on mine and you definitely need to make sure all the wires from the stator are in good shape these are notorious for the wires just falling apart. The stator is available aftermarket but shop around they are usually more than the motor is worth. GET A GOOD MANUAL

Hello sorry But one other thing if the motor is running on muffs do not use the kill switch to shut it off use the choke. Kill switch is for in the water only otherwise you can damage the ignition.

I have the phasemaker ign on my '73 9.8 and got parts from CDI in Alabama. I got new charge coils (the ignition coils were good) and they rebuilt the electronics box in the stator. I had to replace all the wiring from the stator...got the wire from CDI too. Have you looked on ebay? Good luck with your 20;they are good runners.
