What is the purpose or significance of the "oil seal" in the bell housing on the intermediate shift shaft? isn't there water on either side of that seal? Should i replace it before i install the bellhousing? While it's apart? although it doesn't look like it would be any trouble to change it with the housing installed. Thanks OEM Part# 26-45587 Sierra # 18-0525

It prevent water from getting into the shift cable area. If not there, it can actually pressurize the shift cable cavity and force water out of the end of the cable on the engine. Really a bad thing, especially bad if in salt water.

evening sns. i think it's critical. like ya said, waters on both side of it. exhust gas + water on it's way out of the exhust system.
i think it's critical since if it leaks, it leaks into the bellows area. water + ujoints, gimble brg = a hard time.... + the front seal of the drive don't keep water out, only gear lub in if water intrudes.....
i used this....... http://www.mercstuff.com/bellhousingstuff.htm....... the 7561. if i did it over again, i think i'd use an oem part and i think there is one. though i don't know the part number.
another reason to think it's a critical part to keep water out is the upgraded part has 2 seals ontoit.... i wonder why they thought it was nessessary to have 2 seals unless it was perhaps an afterthought to help keep water out of the drive shaft area....

Oh ok Don i see what you mean even though there's bellows it keeps pressure out, And Zig the parts break down from merc shows only one seal. Are you saying they maybe upgraded it to two seals? well thats ok too. Anyway i'll add that to the list thanks guys. Apreciate the info.:)
