I have a 1970 Johnson 60 hp motor that has a foam lining in the cowl. The foam is beginning to flake off. I am wondering if this foam can be replaced? If it needs to be there at all? or can I spray something on the remaining foam to seal it. Thanks.

DebS, go to a hardware store and buy a strip of weatherstripping as close to the size as you need and try that. You can buy the self adhesive kind.

Rich

Or just rip it all out. you may notice an increase in noise levels, but that's about it.
But regardless of whether you reove it or replace it, Make sure you get all the old liner out. If the carb injests this,it could be expensive.
But if you can live with the louder operation, the liner does not serve much of any other function.

You might try yhat spray foam for sealing.... from a builders supply store.... be carefull it GROWS as it dries..... so spread it thin... then you may have to trim it....
It seems not flammable after it dries... I tried to light it on fire.. it wont burn

bah just rip it out, its like that hoodliner on a car. its just dead weight! you can go faster if you chunk it.

Thank you all very much. I think rip it out wins!

I tore it all out, scraped with a scraper, cleaned up the scraps with Acetone - (let it completely dry) and was on my way. Thanks all.
