Hi all. New to the forum and outboards as well. Recently I received a freebie 12 foot aluminum v-hull and trailer. I decided I wanted some power so I could get her to the fishing spots on the river and could not turn up the ad I recently saw in my local craigslist. It was a 1970 evinrude lightwin 4hp advertised for 25$. The recoil assembly is completely missing and the plug wires are torn up at he spot where they are connected to the bottom of the, is it called a coil plate? Whatever its called, it just does not seem like a good place for the wires as they are constantly rubbing every time the throttle handle is moved. What is the proper placement of these wires so they are unobstructed when the throttle is moved ? It needs a prop. Gear oil looks real clean. No number for the compression, but is sure pops off your thumb from both cylinders. Could probably use a new impeller. Carb also could surely use some cleaning and probably a rebuild/gaskets. What else do I need to do ? Where are good places to order parts without paying through the nose ? Thanks folks, and happy, safe boating to ya.

Well, it sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you. You can probably order most of the parts right here on iboats. The plug wires will move with the mag plate, just the way it's made.

Your can buy all of the common parts here at iboats. For the recoil starter, you'll have to look at ebay or at the salvage yards listed here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=438822
Oddly enough, most if not all of the starter parts are available new; just not the whole assembly. The individual parts would be over 200 bucks.
