Look up Fairwinds marina in Annapolis MD....just google them... Give them a call and tell them the model number off your ID plate on the motor and tell them you need the SOLENOID ASSEMBLY, Upper and lower. I think your OMC numbers are 0580780 SOLENOID ASSEMBLY, Upper and 0580781 SOLENOID ASSEMBLY, Lower

Lets us know what you find out.

Re: 1970 evinrude hydro electric shift 50 hp

I just got a 1971 50 HP electric shift model 50173S and have been told by some people the solenoids are impossible to find. I think if mine goes out I will try to rewind the solenoid myself as the main reasons a solenoid goes out is the wiring overheats or shorts from vibration and then they are toast. Replace the wiring and it should be good to go. I do however have no experience with this particular solenoid so I don't know if it is encased in a way that would make this difficult. However there are a lot of sources for bare solenoids and I'm fairly sure one could eventually come up with a solution so don't give up if you don't find any readily available.

tollycrafter, if you do find a cheap alternative to buying OEM solenoids, please post back here. This would be very valuable information to those with the hydro-electric shift units and the information could easily be found by using the "Search" function.

This is one source which has detailed data sheet specs on each solenoid: http://www.mouser.com/Electromechanical/Solenoids/_/N-4wdi6?Keyword=solenoid&FS=True
You would need to find one with the same pull distance and hopefully same size in 12 volt DC. One might have to MacGuyver the attachment points or you might get lucky.

However since I'm not familiar with what the solenoid looks like yet in these Evinrudes I can't say for sure if any of these might work. I'll be working more on my '71 50 HP tomorrow so if I see the solenoid I may have more info.
