I have a 1970 Evinrude (Model 60073D). I Tried starting it yesterday and it would idle fine. The problem occurred when I tried to advance the throttle it would not even get half way then it would immediately stall out... What could this be? I used brand new fuel..... Ideas??

Second. The same motor would not shift into neutral. From the control box it seemed to be fine. I ohm'd out the solenoids. One was 5 ohms and one was open loop. It was the green solenoid that was OL. That being said, what part# is required to fix this, and is it that bad of a job to get the solenoids out and change them?

Thanks for your help in advance!!

Stalling out = Usually caused by fouled carburetors, clogged high speed jets in bottom center portion of float chamber.

Green wire solenoid = Not sure which one is "green". Top solenoid is part # 580780, bottom solenoid is part number 580781.

Solenoids are easy to remove once you have the lower unit off.

Solenoid plunger adjustment is: Solenoid(s) must be sitting in lower unit, plunger must be slightly lower than the top of the solenoid BUT NO LOWER than 1/64" from the top of the solenoid.

well, I just took the top carb off, and it seemed to be clean. No visible build up anywhere. I sprayed with cleaner anyways.... I have to check the other two still. Are there any other adjustments or things to check?

Did you manually clean the high speed jet(s) that I mentioned? Best to clean them with a piece of single strand steel wire as solvents really don't clean them thoroughly.

Well, just to follow up I pulled the lower unit off today and found that the wires going to the shift solenoids were twisted together and duct taped... needless to say one of the wires was not connected... thus the open loop on my meter. i crimped the wires properly and now i get 4.9ohms on both solenoids! I have not started it and tried it out but I'm hoping my problem is fixed! Now to figure out the carbs.....
