I was given a 1972 18' Fiberform Tril Hull over the weekend. It has a 1970 115HP Evinrude. I want to restore the entire boat. The person who I got it from said it ran fine the last time he used it about 5 years ago, although he said he did have some problems with the throttle box (where the key goes). I put a new battery in it and thats all i hear is a clicking noise. Any advise on how I should go about getting the motor up to par? I took the cover off and the motor looks very clean, no oil leaks around the seals, wiring intact, no rust or corrision. Do they make paint that would match the original color?
How reliable is the 1970 Evinrude 115HP?

Thanks for any advise.

Great advice from BK. After reading all that great info.. If the controller has issues, you may want to pull the plugs, reconnect wires to plugs, bypass starter solenoid. If it turns over check compression, if ok ground plugs and check for spark, if that checks ok then you can go from there.

Suggest you check the cables between the battery and motor. If the solenoid is clicking but nothing else is happening you very well could have a bad cable. That's presuming when you said you put in the new battery you cleaned the terminals on the ends of the cables and they're in good shape.

A clicking solenoid is a good sign of a bad battery connection. A bad battery connection is an excellent way of destroying the alternator rectifier AND the ignition pulse pack. ($$$$$$). You asked if it is a good model. It is, but is finicky about the electronics. The ignition system was state of the art in 1970, but isn't so great by today's standards. Worse, nobody understands them and result in messing it up.

The other thing that wasn't so great was the water pump. Don't even think of taking it out without changing the impeller. If fact if somebody hasn't already done so, and it still has the aluminum pump housing, replace the whole pump with a repair kit from Evinrude. It will update it to a plastic housing with stainless steel liners.

Hey, someone with an older motor than me! That's a good looking motor, though. You said it's clicking when you turn the key? Is it the solenoid (the little scoal can close to the starter) that's clicking? If so, it sounds like your starter might be dead. I would think if your cables were bad, you'd get no action from your solenoid and since your solenoid is popping, your starter should spin at least a little. If, however, the clicking you're hearing is your starter spinning up to the flywheel and stopping, that's another story.

Here are some pictures of my project...The motor seems to be real clean.. I will take the advise and replace the water pump/impeller. I want to paint the motor.. do they make the same color paint that was on a 1970 Evinrude?? or do I have to use something else.

Good project for you. At this point I would focus on getting the engine3 service and running properly before spending time or money on the look pretties. Follow the FAQ and be sure that includes removing all battery cables at the engine & battery, thouroughly cleaning them and re attaching them. That is the cuse of most click but won't start problems.

Moeller makes rattle can paint that works reasonably well and comes close to matching the OEM color... You can get it right here at Iboats.com...

IMHO, the first thing I would do is take that whale tale off and dispose of it in the nearest trash receptacle.... JMHO...

Good luck with your project and welcome to Iboats....:D
