Help needed,I have a 1970 115 Evinrude electro shift motor sn/115083d.My problem is that at idle it seems to cut down on cylinders then dies all together ,but it starts back up ok and does the same thing .Under load it is fine and I have no problems power wise.I have changed the plugs and check the water pump and still no different .Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suspect the fuel delivery system, because it runs fine everywhere but idle.
If it were missing, sneezing, or fluxuating, I would keep ignition in the picture, but by what you have stated, we can rule it out. This leaves fuel delivery ,compression, and exuast. Everything from the fuel tank to the reeds.
The fact that it runs good under load would sometimes eliminate the fuel pump, but not allways.

That is a bunch to look at. Fuel pump, filters, goo in the carbs, carb adjustment,(Not likely if you haven't changed the adjustment), restricted fuel tank vent, restricted fuel tank pickup, air leak in fuel line, air leak in fuel coupling, loose bolts on fuel pump, fuel pump checks and.or diaphram,or idle adjustment.
But before trying to track it down, run a compreesion test. Without good compression, the engine can't breathe,or pump fuel the way it should.
If the exaust ports are plugged with carbon, the engine ,again, can't breathe. This is very common on outboards and other 2cycle motors. the carbon can plug the exaust.
A can of decarb cleaner can sometimes blow this crud out, restoring your performance.
I'm sorry to have to give you such a large list..But realy, it's a process of ellimination.

Well I have just finished going through what you said.Having just bought the motor s/h 6 mths ago then had it checked by a dealer while I was present and it was found to be in really good condition. It was serviced at the same time.I changed all the filters and checked all the lines still the same so I whipped the carbs off and in 1 jet there was a small piece of crud.Cleaned it up and ran it on the muffs and it seems ok.But the big test will be this weekend when we go fishing. Thanks very much for your help and I'll post a follow up on this thread after our trip once again many thanks.....

Re: 1970 Evinrude 115 cuts out at idle

Well took the boat out and no different, even tried priming the bulbwhile running and changed to a tote tank and a new fuel line and nothing. So being somewhat dismayed came home and looked a bit deeper, took the flywheel, stator, distributor cap and rotor off all looked fine ,checked the base plate assembly and found the anti reverse spring was all but worn out and broken, could this be the cause of the miss at idle????If so how do I get the base plate off?? I have undone the screws and clampsbut cannot lift it over the thing on the crank that looks like a 4 sided type of cam any ideas ?? Thanks
