1970 9.5 stopped!!

After serving me for 30 years, my 1970 Johnson 9.5 stopped after running for only a minute or so last week. I noticed it smelled like is was getting hot, so I shut it down.I suspect the water pump may be bad. Where can I get information on fixing the water pump? The motor never had a water "stream" indicating the water was pumping, so it is hard to tell when the pump is working.
Any advice is appreciated, I can't afford another motor, and the fish are just beginning to come up the river here in Oregon!

If you'll type in..."9.5 water pump"...using the quotation marks....in the search box < the blank box with the magnifying glass symbol next to it> you can find info...also..marineengine.com or boats.net will have diagrams of your motor

I took off the lower unit, and found the water intake clogged. The engine started right up in a barrel of water, but I could not see any water coming out. I was afraid to run it for very long, how can I tell if there is water pumping through the motor?

Can't tell you where the water discharge is But if you don't see water its not pumping.
At this point you are about 38 years late putting in a new impeller.
There is also a thermostat above the top cylinder you need to be aware of.

It must be 9.5 week, the water on my 65 comes out a rubber hose on the left rear, It should spatter out of it at an idle. Have you checked the screen on the under side of the lower unit? He is right about the thermostat, three bolts at the top of the power head in the rear, you may check the hose that I mentioned and see if something has nested in it.

There's not much magic to the water-cooling system in the 9.5. The water is sucked in by the rotation of the impeller in the lower unit - if the vanes of the impeller are broken off, no water will be sucked in. The water then travels up through the top of the impeller housing and up through a brass pipe which sticks into the top of the impeller housing. The brass pipe runs all the way up to the bottom of the motor, where there is an o-ring and fitting. The water then travels inside the motor and exits where the ribbed rubber tube is - along with the exhaust.

My guess:
Bad impeller, clog somewhere, or water tube not connected properly.

Thank you for all the responses. The video was especially helpful. Believe it or not, the impeller was in fantastic shape. The tube that draws in the water was clogged. I bought the motor in 1985, and used it very little since. It has been sitting in my barn for the last 5 years, but still started right up. The problem I had was I didn't have a large enough barrel to totally flood the pump chamber. As soon as I switched to a larger barrel, the water came right out the spout like in the video. I will be taking it to the river this evening to test it out. Thank you again for all your help.

Improper water depth in the barrel has caused more than one " your favorite expletive"
