I have A 1970 25 hp evinrude,I purchased it with a 1957 16'ft boat and a very well built 1960 home made trailer for $250.00, fiberglass runabout doesnt leak a drop so cant complain! But I bought it from A deaf and mute guy literally! So not alot of info on the motor,It has good compression,I took apart the carburetor float bowl it was clean I checked for spark at the plugs there was spark,I pulled the flywheel to check the points they were not to bad,the coil packs looked like new, but still this pig won't start. Now here's my question: I noticed that the plug wires under the rubber caps were quite corroded one had greenish white deposits and the other was like that on the end, but when I stripped it back some, it was black. Would this be enough to keep it from running? I'm new to out boards. Thank you. Junkman.

I doubt it. If you can get a 1/4"-3/8" long spark off each plug on the ignition system, it's good and the timing is at least close.
You have the right plug wire on the right spark plug right?
If all that checks out, put a little pre-mix (50:1) in a spray bottle like a windex bottle, and mist down the carb's throat & crank. See if you can get it to fire on that.

Thanks. I will check and make sure there not mixed up and try your suggestion. Somtimes it's very easy to over look the obvious.

I didn't get around to looking at my motor yesterday,But today I'm looking at the top of the stator plate, or magneto, whatever you call it,And scratching my head,Dumb guestion! I am assuming the top cylinder is #1 but I don't know what wire/coil goes to it,This is A point magneto system like the old 70's honda elsanore dirt bikes I remember working on when I was younger, but they were single cylinder. I'm guessing the coil closest to top cylinder.

Also are Sierra tune up products: points/condensers good after market products?
Thank you.
Charlie.

The Sierra ignition parts are better than the dealer parts IMO. Dealer carb kit, head gaskets I like better than Sierra's. Water pump parts seem to me to be about the same.
The coil that runs the top cylinder is the one that's mostly forward (carb side). Problem is, it's a pain in the neck (literally) to trace the plug wires back to their coils. But there's no better way of checking that I know.
Flywheel nut torque is 40-45 ft/lbs. ;)

Thank you very much! I would have mixed them up,maybe this has been my trouble all along. Oh well I'm sure a good tune up can't hurt. This motor looks as though someone took good care of it,I'd hate to f it up. The deaf & mute guy moved away, he wasn't much help anyway, so don't have any history on her. Tomorrow I think I'll take a trip to the city to find a manual,I live in a small town that doesnt have much of a library. bout a 30 mile trip but better to spend the money on the gas than ruin a good motor.
Thank's again junkman.
