Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain V21

I tell you one thing is for sure, this will not be my last Starcraft. I still find myself looking in back yards and on Craigslist.
Come on man, you score a free Chieftain that isn't utterly & completely trashed, and is actually pre-demo'd???? And you're still surfing CL & checking out backyards?? You've reached the pinnacle. Where do you go from here???

is it just me or are we seeing a more virulent, likely antibiotic-resistant strain of the MBS bug......?? first poor Zach and now you.....

This strain is a most disturbing trend. Not even borderline hoarding, just full blown, put you on TV, hoarding..... Depending on the current state of affairs w/ the Admiral, this behavior may lead to a court marshall:eek:

Re: 1969 Starcraft Chieftain V21

OK GA you guys caught me snoozing again..... The 65 and 66 brochures show the 22 footers available in both I/O and OB. In 67 they were not listed as available. We don't have a 68 and the 69 and up doesn't show the 22 footers with OB available either.

HOWEVER, I guarentee you that if a customer asked a dealer to set them up a blank with an OB in it then it happened (probably from the factory but if not then from the dealership). Especially when we know that the parts were available and you could assume they would be for several years just from a service standpoint.

I know that hull on the 69 is exactly the same hull as the 66 Sunchief and it was available in OB as was the 66 Chieftain.

I guess we try with what info we can find but I'm sure there were some dealers out there stirrin up trouble along the way. Just like the automoble dealers of the 60's and early 70's offering dealer aftermarket supercars that in some cases irritated the heck out of the manufacturer's.

Nah, NB - Not snoozing. I think we just dig through those brochures and other SC info sources so much and find what may or may not be inconsistencies in their marketing. Must have worked. Has any other pleasure boat manufacturer been in business for over a century? Now how about a Chevy 427 ZL1 Mercruiser powered 22 foot Holiday? Oh my!

I do have a serial number off the rating plate. Is there a way to find out for sure from that. I looked everywhere and can't find a hull number anywhere. The rating plate says outboard 170 hp and the serial number is 1027080. Any help would be great.

I was thinking like a Carolina blue over white? I don't know though. To many options and choices. I'm going to need some help.

BK, is that the plate that looks like this?

NB - Here is a picture of my rating plate. Let me know what you are thinking.

JB - Come on now, I just love the look of those early 60's tin runabouts with the wrap around windshield.

GA - I'd love to ride in that 427 powered Holiday for sure!

BK, as long as you get it built to your standards, we'll all be happy for you.

And in the most of the 60's, Starcraft would have printed whether the boat was an OB or I/O just after the name of the model.

BK - Your plate confirms an outboard Chieftain. It certainly looks like a factory plate too. 170 HP max, that should move her. I guess I try to rely on the brochures too much.

We get kinda anal about IDing these old tinnies. And I think attempts to get info out of Starcraft have been futile except in very few cases.

But you still have a great Chieftain. BTW - the blue over white is one of the classic schemes and go well together. I looking forward to seeing her as she evolves.

Actually his plate doesn't confirm anything. Thru most of the 60's the plates would say Chieftain OB or Chieftain I/O. ALL of the plates reference an outboard motor when talking about max HP whether the boat is an OB or I/O. Look at the data plate for My I/O Sunchief. It also references a OB when talking about the max HP.

Nobody's born with these mad Starcraft skillz. You kind of learn them along the way. That's the beauty of our little Klan here. We help each other out in the restoration. Hone your skills, make a few friends and voila, at the end you got a new $15,000,000 boat. Easy peasy lemon squeezey.

(Caution boat restorations may cause lowered blood pressure, a sense of accomplishment and earn you the admiration of your wife and kids. Check with your Doctor to see if Starcraft boat restoration is right for you.) Oh are you in luck, Dr. Jasoutside is free to see you this morning.:D

That's in Starcraft dollars per smile. SC dollars run about a 1000X normal US dollars in return on investment;) Especially in smiles:)
