Hellow, I have a 1969 Merc. 160 GMC. I am trying to replace the steering cable. On the transom, I have loosend the retainer couplings on the aluminum tube. This being an old cable, dose the aluminum tube slide out? It looks like the tube and cable are one unit. I can not get it to move! The aluminum tube is inside two round holes that is conected to the transom plate. I am not sure how to get the cable out?? Any help would be Great! Thanks

Re: 1969 merc. 160 steering replacement

There should be a tube that is part of the transom assy that the end of the steering cable slider through. Follow the cable to the transom the big nut looking thing connects the cables outer casing to the tube loosen till it lets go of the tube. On the other end of the tube the cable protrudes and to the steering. Take the pin or bolt out on this end. Now if the cable is stuck you may have to drive it back through the tube to get it out. A hammer and long punch will work. Be sure to clean the inside of this tube very well prior to installing new cable.

Hey James, Their is no nut on the cable or the tube. I looks like one piece. I have looked at the other end of the cable on the helm and it has a nut on it but not on the transom and that is what has me confused!
