1969 Johnson, engine reving in bucket

I am new to outboard motors. I noticed that one cylinder was slow to fire as I was reving up the engine in the bucket. Do these engines perform differently in a bucket of water? Could the turbulance in a confined space reduce the amount of water available to the water pump? It seems to idle fine, its only when I try to rev the engine up.

What is the hp of your 1969 Johnson outboard? Do you know the compression? Have you tested the spark? Running an outboard in a barrel can be a pretty common practice. The water needs to be past the lower unit about 1/3 of the way up the exhaust housing. As long as it is submerged well enough, it should run just fine. Could be many things, need more info!

You can only do so much by barrel-testing it. Confirm that it runs and rough-set the idle circuit. You shouldn't be revving it up in a barrel. The real test is to put it in the the water and lake test it.
