hello, just bought this motor started up first time but won't go forward, neutral and reverse work fine any help is appreciated

I assume you are shifting the motor when it is running? Sounds like a silly question but some motors do not like to shift when not running.

yes as I found out it did not work when on the lake and it did work in reverse. I just assume it is a linkage problem but not sure how to get there and adjust it.

I love those little 9.5's! I had a '69 Johnson and a '70 evinrude. Do you have experience removing lower units? Was there lower unit oil in the motor or did you check?

I am somewhat familiar with removing lower units and no I have not done so with this one as of yet. Is that where I will find the linkage?
