Re: 1969 9.8 Merc Low speed idle adjustment
Try 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 turns, that oughta be close enough to start 'er up.
Once you get the motor running and warmed up in gear, find the range of adjustment in which it'll go too-lean to too-rich and set the idle mix just a wee bit on the rich side of the midpoint of the rich-lean adjustment.
Most of these motors are pretty touchy and a small adjustment makes a big diff. Once you've found the range, make small adjustments (no more than 1/8 turn) on the idle mixture needle and wait 10-20 seconds or so for the idle to stabilize before evaluating.
If you find it's really cranky upon cold startup and wants to die out upon acceleration, richen up the mixture. If it loads up and smokes when idling, lean 'er out a touch.
