Yes, I got all three bolts out. I have it soaking in penetrating oil as we speak. Does it have a metal gasket? (thats what it looked like)

Do you think the thermostat could have failed and caused the passage to be completely blocked?

Original might be, i'm sure they are normal gasket material now a days, once you get the housing off there is an oring as well that probably will need replacing along with the t-stat.

Re: 1969 9.5 Johnson Not Pumping Water

Update:
As I was waiting for the thermostat cover to loosen up(4 or 5 days), I just decided to try and blow some air (from my mouth) through the flexible tubing I had connected to the water pickup tube. And to my surprise, I was able to get a little bit blown through!!!! I hooked it back up to the water hose and water came out of the exhaust relief hole too!!!!!! I was able to completely flush out the cooling system. I guess blowing some water up there loosened up whatever was blocking the passageway. I decided to take it to the boat ramp and test it out. It fired right up and was cycling water just fine. So thanks to everybody for your help and advice!!!

I then cruise around for a little while at low speeds and decide to open her up to full throttle. I get to about 1/4 throttle and it accelerates just fine, then I kept turning the twist grip on the tiller handle to full throttle but nothing happened. The motor stayed at 1/4 throttle no matter how much further I twisted the tiller. It ran great at slow speeds. I assumed this was maybe the 3 month old gas I was using(had a full tank and didn't want to waste it just yet0, and maybe that old gas was fouling the plugs. I checked the compression on the cylinders, and it was 70 psi & 72 psi.

I have now been reading up on ethanol and fuel lines recently, and I'm starting to believe the old gas sitting in the carb combined with old fuel lines may be causing the problem. My guess is that the gas sitting in the fuel lines for 3 months caused the fuel lines to shed a bit of its lining then get caught in the high speed orifice in the carb when I started the engine.

What do you guys think of this hypothesis? I'm just trying to get a few opinions before I go buy the $30 carb rebuild kit.

Thanks,
Ben

Check to see if the carb butterfly is opening up fully when you turn the twist grip wide open, could be a linkage issue.

If not then it's probably due for a carb service.

Sounds like the rubber has lost its set. Has it ever overheated? I would agree, put a new impeller in right away. Best of luck. Rick.
