6hp johnson - YouTube

this is my 6hp johnson running, my questions are

why so much smoke?

It seems to run fine in the barrel, but when i get on the water it revs up real high on rpm and shuts off, then acts like it flooded cause it wont crank for a bit. why?

black oil leaks out of the foot near the prop after i take it out, i heard its the rich and lean problem but cannot figure it out, when i tested it yesterday the barrel was oily on the top, so its leaking out while its running too i suppose.

Why so much smoke? Cause it's a 2 stroke...

What fuel/oil mix are you running (should be 50:1)?
Have you adjusted the carb while on the water? Needs to be fine tuned while the engine is under load, adjusting it in the barrel only gets it running.
When you squeeze the primer bulb, does it eventually get firm?
Have you checked over the ignition making sure the coils aren't cracked, the points are clean and adjusted properly, and the plug wires aren't leaking spark?

Oil on the water in the barrel, and black oil coming out of the exhaust around the prop is normal (spent oil).

check your fuel pump for leaks from the back where it attaches to the block< this is where it gets it's pulse to drive the diaphram>. Just unmount from the block and then squeeze the primer bulb until it firms up and check for leaks. If it leaks fuel out, you'll have to replace or rebuild the pump. If no leaks observed, pull the fuel line off the carb and pull the motor through a few times < spark plugs out so it won't start and no compression to overcome while pulling >. You should see a strong pulse of fuel that doesn't weaken or stop. If it does, the f/p is suspect. Post back if you don't see a problem with the f/p. BTW, I would advise you to be a little lighter on the throttle when the motor is in neutral, 1,500 rpms or less is enough.

yeah i run a 50:1 ratio gas, i don't usually rev the throttle unless it is in gear, i think it was in gear when i did it. I don't know much about adjusting the carb, maybe theres a youtube video somewhere that will teach me. i quit taking this boat out cause it started to die out and give me hell. i thought it was only kicking on one cylinder, but they both fire,

i replaced the water impeller, points, capacitors, head gasket, took out the temperature thing, and it's been serviced regularly, the mechanic says every time that it runs great (in the bucket) but it doesn't when im stuck up creek

and yes the bulb on the gas line gets firm,

i think it has to do with the carb/fuel.. i will check those things out

any way i can put it under pressure without loading the boat and getting stuck in the river ?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that motor. A lot of that smoke will clear up once you put a load on it. Oil in the water is normal as well as unburnt exhaust crud dripping out of the prop area. A lot of the crud dripping will clear up as well once you start running it hard like it wants, instead of idling it in a barrel.

You should verify that the carbs are adjusted properly. Here is how you do it.

took out the temperature thing

That temperature thing (I assume you're talking about the thermostat) is a required item.
With out it, the engine never gets up to full operating temperature, will run like crap, and will collect excessive fuel/oil (probably why yours is smoking excessively).

Put a new one in.

im down in south georgia where its always hot, i didnt think the thermostat was necessary, or at least thats what i was told

It doesn't matter how hot it is outside, air temp matters little to this motor since it's water cooled. Unless you're boating on water that's around 140? (the temp that the thermostat starts to open), running a engine with a wide open cooling system is running the engine too cold.

People assume that a thermostat is just a needless restriction, or it's there to warm the engine up quicker.
It's function is to maintain the right temp, so the engine can completely burn the fuel and oil.

You need to put one back in.. ;)

how far into your trips does it quit?...is your fuel tank vented properly?..try running with the fuel cap loose and see if this has any effect.
