1969 18' Starcraft commodore

I am trying to restore this project, but can't mate lower unit to upper and get the shifting right , any suggestions?

Correction, 1969 ,1900 ss toronado 140 horse 18' having issues mating lower and getting the shifting clocked right, any suggestions?

Welcome aboard Chopper.

Mercruiser that old is a bit out of my wheelhouse but I do know to put the 2 halves together off the boat is easiest. The drive should be in forward gear when doing the mating and your shifter has to be too when putting the LU back on.
