1968 Johnson V4 Golden Meteor - Cooling question

Where should the water be exiting from ? A small amount comes out of the exhaust which I read is normal . Is that the only exit ? I looked for a small hole on the rear as I have seen on other outboards but I am 100% positive there is NO hole . I'm getting ready to take it out on the lake but want to make sure it is cooling properly .
Any help is greatly appreciated .

Take it out to the lake and try it as that is the only proper way to test it. If you want, buy a cheap infared temp gun and check the temp then.

There should be some water coming out of the idle relief, most likely as a spray. That engine does have an idiot light to indicate overheating , You can test for continuity by disconnecting the wire to the sensor( a knife connecter ) and grounding the wire, with the ignition switch on run. that should light the light on the dash

I cannot find an idle relief anywhere. There are no holes exiting the case for water to come out of ...

I have the same engine and the only place the water comes out is exhaust
You have to watch out and only run it off a hose for so long because it doesn't supply enough water and it will get hot quick
I had to put a new water pump in myself and now when in the lake it pumps out like a hydrant

The hole is in the back side of the mtr abobut 8 " down from the bottom of the cowl right in the center of the mtr. Needs to be in a DEEP tub or the lake to pump.

I still can't find the hole . The only hole is on the rear of the engine , just below where the lid mates.. but it goes straight up into the engine compartment into the tab that the lid slides in to . You can see right through it. I have it in a trash can with the water level just above the flat fin thing ( the water line is right at the lower unit gear oil plug. I pulled the thermostat house and started it for a few seconds and nothing came out. I tossed the housing back on and tried again , water shot all over. I have yet to get it to move any water again. Maybe it was just water left in the head. I don't even have water coming from the exhaust anymore which makes me think it ws left over water from the last time it was ran..if that is possible .

Where did you buy your pump and how mch was it? I;m having a hard time tracking one down.


EDIT: Unless you are refering to the upper exhaust hole.. it's about the ID of a half dollar.. I have read that most of the exhaust comes out of the bottom, which seems to be true.. and the rest comes out from the half dollar size hole which is actually about 8" from the bottom of the lid. Geez, now I'm second guessing myself. I swear I saw exhaust coming from that hole...maybe it's not even the exhaust? I swore it was.

The water level needs to be at least another 6-8" higher on the lower unit.

EDIT: Unless you are refering to the upper exhaust hole.. it's about the ID of a half dollar.. I have read that most of the exhaust comes out of the bottom, which seems to be true.. and the rest comes out from the half dollar size hole which is actually about 8" from the bottom of the lid. Geez, now I'm second guessing myself. I swear I saw exhaust coming from that hole...maybe it's not even the exhaust? I swore it was.

That is the exhaust relief. It allows the exhaust an easy way out of the engine during starting and idling, Once the engine is running put your hand against it to block it and you'll see all the exhaustr is being forced to exit under water. During almost all operation of the engine water and water vapour will be seen discharging here

and since your breaking it apart you'll need 0305312 gasket

Wow! Where the heck does it suck from?? Maybe this is why I'm getting little to no water pumping.. I should probably replace the pump anyway though, it sat for a few years before I bought it. I'd hate to take it out and fry the engine.

The water pump is located at the top of the lower unit. You only have to submerge the pump a couple of inches deep in the water for it to be primed. On these old OMC motors there are two water inlets, one behind the prop and the second one above the anti ventilation plate on the port side. the second inlet is at the level of the water pump and needs to be under water at all times or it will suck in air.

The water pump doesn't suck the water up to the pump, it pumps water to the power head if the water pump is submerged in the water.
When the boat sits in the water, where is the water level on the exhaust housing, well above the pump.

After you get the new water pump in it take it to the lake and see what happens. That is the true test.
