1968 Evinrude will not run in water

Hey there, I just bought a boat with a 1968 40 Hp Evinrude, with the muffs on hooked up to a garden hose it runs like a dream, but as soon as I put it in the lake it will only run for about 10 seconds then bog right out, I am stumped as this makes no sense to me, it's like the water is too much for it to handle, any suggestions?

Most likely bad coils, but could be plugs or plug wires. Mine did the same run good in tank out on water damn glad I was close to shore. Will be working on mine again pretty quick, grandson Jon will be here tomorrow. 10 yrs old, try this Grandpa usually it works. Then he can't wait to tell everybody.

did you rebuild the carbs? if you did, richen it up slightly and readjust the carbs in the water, the motor needs the back pressure from the water to adjust the mix needles correctly. if you did not rebuild them do so, the jets could very easily be dirty.
