I'm trying to replace my waterpump in my 1968 evinrude 6 hp outboard. I can't seperate the upper gearcase from the exhaust housing. Do I have to remove the lower gearcase housing (skeg?)from the upper gearcase housing or can that all off as one piece? I have removed the clamp (which totally sucked) from the shift lever but I'm now lost. I've never taken one apart before.
Please help before I pull the remainder of my hair out!!

I kind of know what you are going thru. But not exactly. '68 I was in the service.
But I'll wager the problem is the shift rod.It may be a 2-piece affair, or single,bolted at the powerhead. Proly 2-piece. If it is, you may find an access plate on the side somewhere, to allow access to the screw holding the 2 halves together.
Some don't have the access plate, and you have to unbolt the lower unit,drop it down, and undo it from the open crack.
The shop manual is still available for it ,i'll bet. It won't be cheap, but it may save you some hair

Re: 1968 Evinrude water pump

HI;
I just replaced the impeller on my '62 Evinrude 28HP twin and I had the exact same problem (at least you found out about the shift lever clamp!). The lower leg would not come off the upper, although it would twist left and right. Problem turned out to be that the drive shaft was rusted up into the bottom of the engine. Eventually I had to force the thing apart which drove the impeller drive pin right through the top of the water pump housing which is very expensive to replace ($70). I got the shaft out of the engine by shooting some WD40 up into it and then tapping the shaft up with a hard rubber hammer. I tried pulling it down first with a vise grip plier and hammer but this did NOT work at all. After I tapped it up a little it came right out. Good luck
