Hi all! I am desperate for help with my 1968 Evinrude startflight ten 85 horse! The wiring harness was bad, and I ordered a new one and it didn't fit! I don't know much about the type of ignition it is either. It's a capacitor discharge ignition system. Does anyone in the least have a wiring diagram for these motors that you could share? I really need to get a good understanding about these motors and specificly there ignition systems. Can anyone help me with information at all?

Thank you!!!

Pete Hain.

P.S. You can email me if you feel the need. If you have something big to type or a file or two to send. Thanks again!!

How do you know it is a '68, Pete? That would be the first question if the wiring harness for a '68 didn't fit.

Tell us the model number, then go to your library and copy the wiring diagram out of their Service Manual.

Better yet, buy a Service Manual. It will save you many times its cost.

Good luck. :)

Amen to the service manual, also a parts catalog for your motor is big plus (lots of schematics).

Mike :)

Re: 1968 Evinrude 85 I need HELP

I'm on the search for all the books I can find that'll help me. I'll check my local library (BIG library) but I don't see how they'd have something for a motor that was basicly only produced for two years. That's why I've never gone to it before for anything like this. I just can't see them having something like that.

I ran the numbers of the motor (I actually posted here when I was looking for a harness) and I came up with '68 and a few other people came up with '68 from the numbers. It's electric shift long shaft as well and does not have through hub exhaust.

Thanks to both of you! I'll check my library, and I know a guy who has books for this motor and I also know where I can get others brand new. Like I think I said, I'm still learning and I'm still trying to get books and info about this motor. I just gotta get it running so I can get it off my boat and begin the boat restoration!
