I'm attempting to replace the impeller in the lower unit. I have remove all the bolts. The lower unit drops down about 3inchs. I know by reviewing other post that you have to disconect the shifting lever on top. however, upon looking where i think it should be removed it looks as though the shaft comming into the top takes a 90 degree turn to the port and then 90's straight up to the shift lever. before I loosen the 1/2" bolt on the clamp where this shaft is connected, will I be able to drop the lower unit once disconnected. Or is there something I am missing. I have ordered the factory service manual, but I am axious to get this done, so any help would be appreciated. Rich in CT

there should be a diamond shaped cover on the left side of the motor (when the prop is facing you), pull that cover off and then there will be a oval cover that needs to come off too
try and salvage the gaskets so you can cut out new ones, inside there will be the shift linkage connection that you need to remove, it should be a brass rod with 2 stainless hex bolts one is accessable through that cover, just unscrew it and the lower unit should slide off the bottom with a good firm tug

and theres your lower unit

the metal thing sitting on the driveway is the waterpump housing and impeller, let me know if you need pics of that

I guess I am the unfortunate one who does not have this access cover on this particular enigine. I believe the 65hp did not come with this option. But, wow pictures and everything, thank you so much for the information.

bigNATE, I have one of these same 'rudes 1968 65 HP. I seem to have cut in the hose that is behind the diamond cover in the first picture. Do you know what that goes to?

Richard.... That access plate exists on all of the 1968 65hp models. If your engine doesn't have one, your engine is a different model.

In one of your other posts, you mention that the hood say "Loop Charged" to which I asked what is the model number of that engine.

Once more.... What is the model number of that engine?
