I'm completely overhauling a StarChief that had 5 layers of paint and epoxy - overall terrible condition.

From the waterline up, I have stripped this boat completely to the aluminum. Everywhere. Including transom.

The bottom was at one time coated with some type of strong epoxy and painted - It appears to be mostly in good condition. Maybe a little worn in a few of the places from the trailer. Might have a few seeps in the bow and who knows... but now major leaks.

What would you suggest to do with this? Possible reseal? How? Or leave it ...

Steel welcome to iboats and the ever growing Starcraft club :D. I would say if the bottom paint isnt peeling just sand it smooth with a random orbit or DA sander and repaint it . Sealing the boat is best done from under the deck with a product called Gluvit thats what all of us here with tinny's are using a 2 pound kit runs around $50.00 make sure all your rivets are tight and apply the gluvit to all the rivets and seams from inside the hull . We like pictures by the way .

Steel, do you have the deck out of the boat right now?

What I did was once the hull was completly stripped down, i put in the plus and filler her with water. then crawled underneath looking for leaks. but you would be better off just going ahead and sealing it with gluvit anyways. cheap insurance. gluvit is a flexable epoxy. i mixed the whole quart at once, it has a pretty long working time and the process was fairly quick to apply it.

btw, starcrafts are are taking over the forum!

The floor is now out ... and the consoles (which I am rebuilding also). I plan on using that product to seal the rivets ... also I need to take to boat to a welder and get the floor supports straightened out (they twisted under the last floor).

After all of this - I will then see where I'm at :)

I do have another post about the motor on here - if anyone can help out with that, it would be greatly appreciated. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=330906

Pics

As you can see it has a LONG way to go - she's gonna be my fishing rig though.

The hull is completely stripped now and the floor has been removed. I'm taking it to a welder this weekend to have the floor supports (aluminum stringers) repaired.

The boat came with the bimini, side covers and rear cover - also have all the original documentation.

Figured for the boat, motor and double axle trailer, the $200 I paid wasn't too bad.

Re: 1967 StarCraft StarChief

Moving forward --

Boat is at the welders now - should be getting it back in the next day or two. I am looking at placing an order for "Gluvit" - but don't know how much I would need? Suggestions :)

I've also decided to paint the cuddy sides and top (partly for glare on a sunny day and partly because the sides are kinda chowed up) - so I bought self etching primer and paint (white). The bow and hull will be staying bare aluminum (might paint the star on the front hatch though).

Also the rub rails are pretty bad - A friend of mine told me about replacing the rubber with rope .. so I going to check into that.

With a new floor and the above stuff, hopefully this project will be coming together. I'll post more photos with the improvements.

Steel I got a 2 pound gluvit kit for my 16' Jupiter ( remember you are only voating the rivets and seams) . You might try local boat dealers for the Gluvit I picked mine up from a local dealer and it was cheaper than ordering online . He did set me up with a commercial account since I own a company and gave me a discount accordingly :D.

Steel,

Nice to see another starchief resurrected :D. I think yours may be a pre 67 model as I have a 67 brochure and it shows the flat winshield version Like my 68 model. Here are 2 pages from the 67 catalog, and the last is from the 68 catalog.

2 lbs of gluvit did mine just fine. I am replacing the rubrail with OEM from Taco, bought here at Iboats

Thanks for the brochure upload ... wonder what year it is then - registration says 1967, but that doesn't mean much :)

That photo with the bride/groom and cake is interesting ... cant forget the cake on a ride I suppose....

Yeah, I LOL when I saw that, wonder if they were rushing to an Island reception? I have seen that style from 63-64 to 66, so maybe it was a 66 purchased in 67 ?? Anyhow, It's nice to see another cuddy in resto, They were real versatile boats, able to handle decent chop and provide a break from the weather, looks like yours was remodeled at some time, I like the more open floorplan. idea they had.
