I have a '67 Mercury 650 (Magneto/points ignition) that died on me the other day on the lake. Got it home and threw it in a bucket to play with it. Long story short, I winded up removing the flywheel to check the timing marks on the on the magneto (to see if it was aligned with mark on crankshaft). Anyhow, it was about 3 teeth off. My problem is that the crank shaft has side to side play in it (maybe between 1/32 and 1/64th of an inch). Am I correct in assuming I need to yank the powerhead and start tearing it apart on a bench? To replace the bearings?

I've been told not to run the beast until I do this (but the guy wasnt a boat mechanic). Any help would be appreciated... Or do any of you have contacts for replacement parts for it or maybe a rebuilt powerhead?

If I can help in any way, I just tore apart a 1958 mark 58a for practice. If you need any parts let me know. I think those crankshaft bearings you speak of were quite clean and in good shape on the one I tore apart. I just got done tearing down my parts engine before I teak into my good one

Jason you can pull the flywheel and take the four bolts out of the upper main cap and pull it, if you lucky all the brg. parts will still be there and you can replace the main brg that way. However if any brg pieces are missing you need to tear the engine down and make sure there not in the engine. Running the engine can cause very costly damage

You can get the bearing and upper seal at any bearing supply house (Kamen Bearing in my area). Set the bearing housing bearing side down in a vice (gently) and heat the housing up with a propane torch. The bearing should fall right out. Take it with you to the bearing place... Should be about 1/3 the cost of what a Merc dealer will sting you...

ok, took some time, but I replaced the upper bearing (it was all there, just had a lot of slop) and I ordered a timing belt... Here's my new problem:
My Flywheel has no marks on it to align the magneto pully marks to. Any Ideas? Can I start with TDC on CYL#1 and see if that works?

Roll the engine up on #1 with a screwdriver or dial indicator then look on the side of the flywheel dirictly inline with the mag shaft there slould be a lime or punch marks there if not mark it. Align the arrow under the plate on the mag drive pulley and the belt is lined up then you will have to ck the timing before going to the lake
