I am in dire need of a starter and bendix unit for a 1967 Johnson 80 HP. The starter motor is a Prestolite MGD 4001 I may have the MGD wrong it may MGD. I am not sure what other years used this starter set up. The motor is a four cylinder. The starter is on the Starboard side of the engine. My Bendix is missing one tooth, and the starter motor is a little ground. I have taken the whole unit of three times now and cleaned it made sure it spun right and still when I bump the engine (try to start it) I just get the high speed spinning noise. PLEASE HELP I have searched and searched the web with no luck.
Thank You Jeff Wolf

A model # for the motor will be helpful.

Unless you have a fully charged battery the starter motor may not spin fast enough to pop up the bendix. If the bendix is meshing with the flywheel but the flywheel isn't turning, then the bendix is bad and must be replaced. Try these folks:
