I recently purchased a boat/engine/trailer with a V4 Johnson Super Seahorse 80hp outboard. The engine is missing the back portion of the wiring harness. Everything from the ignition back is present but from the connector back is missing. I know this harness will cost about 200 to replace but I'm hesitant to do it because I have no idea if this engine will run reliably once I make this investment. I've had a couple guys tell me to just sell it for scrap. Is there any way for me to test this engine out for common issues before making this purchase so I can be at least somewhat confident that I won't be shelling out even more money? Or should I take the other advice and just scrap it out?

Well you can make the basic tests such as compression. Check the lower unit oil. You can even start it up without a lot of trouble. That model is what I would call one of the last of the simple motors. Manual shift, automotive ignition, a simple two barrel carburetor, etc. I guess the bottom line is condition is everything.
