I traded for this engine 2 weeks ago. The guy says it could probably use a tune up since in had not been run in over a year. I tried it out after he left it started and run pretty darn good in three to 5 pulls.

I did the tune up now it won't start. It tries to but just can't run over about 4 seconds.

I gapped my plugs on .030 and the points on .020

Any suggestions ??????

Welcome to the forum!

If you havent already I would recomend that you also put in new water pump impeler. And change lower unit oil look for water in oil. If so then you will need new seal kit.

As for motor not running. I would try spray premix into carb throat. If it contunies to run it means you need to clean carb. Also check for air leaks.

If sprayin fuel into the carb dosent help. Then you need to do a spark test. It should jump at least 1/4 air gap.

You really need an OEM service manual.

Good Luck!

I did all of the recommended PM's all is well there now.

Where/how would I check for air leaks? This is my 1st Outboard motor. My forte' is small engine repair (briggs onan honda etc)
I am really at a loss. Are my points/plug gaps correct?
Thanks for the info Goodoleboy. I'll try your suggestions.

Where is the best place to get OEM manual?

Re: 1967 Johnson 6hp Won't start

Okay now here is a strange one...

I did nothing except when I got home today from work I went out and pulled 2 times on the rope and the thing started. Out of the water tank. When I put it in the tank it continued to run in neutral. Put it in FW or RV and WOT it seems very weak. In neutral it sounds super strong. Here is the catch it WILL NOT START in the water (which is how I was trying to start it before...in the tank).

What is up with that?? Anybody ever experienced this.....

Back pressure from water over exaust is why it wont start in water.

Your not pulling fuel into cylinders. You will need to clean carb really good. No air leaks in lines or around carb base. See if fuel pump is puting out fuel.

If you wana get it started in tank then squirt premix into carb throat.

Good luck!

Preciate it goodoleboy. I feel fish out of water on this outboard but I believe I may be an expert in a few weeks. This is definately a learning experience for me.
