I have a 67 johnson 40 HP super sea horse and on my last outing it sloped out of gear in mid-high rpm so I turned around to head back and part way back to the dock it died it runs great in neutral but when forward or reverse is engaged it dies instantly like something in the lower unit is seized but when the engine is off with key on and in gear the prop can be turned by turning the flywheel any ideas what the issue could be

Electric shift, right? My guess is the cable going down to the lower unit is burned up. Let us know if I got the prize.
